On Pornography as the Winter Museum Julie
This short story surprised me quite a bit. I not only enjoyed it, but it also led to continuous marination. Unlike Strange Library, the metaphors and ending remain undefined, so here lies my loosely interpreted analysis and questions. The journey to get to the winter museum is difficult to navigate at first but with time becomes easier and then you can do it with your eyes closed. My theories for this metaphor are that getting to the museum is like initiating sex - it is hard to navigate at first and the more you do it, the more routine it becomes. The seasonal choice of winter stumped me a bit. The tasks which the narrator performs are automatic as he mentions, and routine is what brings comfort to me in the winter. Yet, the tasks themselves, changing a light bulb, posting the holiday closures, and putting away a popular jar are done without questioning. The popular jar is put to bed, a hibernation if you will. The lightbulb which was not dead yet was replaced with more longevity. In my understanding, these contradictions are those that outline winter as a season, one that you do not have a lot of sex in unless you are lucky or in a relationship. Yet, after he performs these tasks he says he gives up on understanding people. This is a by-product of his erection, winter, and performing odd tasks he does not question. The mundane routine can only be saved by his sexual desire ultimately.
